Online shopping is convenient and easy; it takes just a few clicks to place an order. Maybe sometimes you need to do a few clicks more for price comparison and product comparison across different websites. I will share with you some tips for safe online shopping across the world for a hassle-free and comfortable life.
However online shopping is very risky. The place where the user, information and money are found, undoubtedly there is a room for malicious hackers too which can harm your important data. Their tactics may include: Deception and Invasion
Deception: The hackers set up the virtual area. It is very difficult to differentiate between reputed seller and hacker. The hacker setup the virtual world. E.g. if the user visits actual website, they click to place an order, at the time of payment transaction the hackers create a virtual view of the actual website so the user could not understand that they are on the unwanted page and when user enter the cardnumber, all the information get saved in their database. At the time of payment processing, the money will be debited into hackers account instead of the actual retailer’s account.
Invasion: Sometimes the user abruptly downloads any software without any knowledge of it. The unwanted software will access your personal information and save it into their database. We cannot guess what the hacker can do but we can take precaution to stay away from it. Now I will share some tips for safe online shopping.
1.Must Use familiar websites: You must buy online items from familiar and well-known websites. If your friend is suggesting you some website please make sure that he or she have already done the transaction from that website. When you type a query into search engine first check, on which website you are clicking (check the name of the website before clicking on it) after clicking again check that you are on the same website or different website. Some hacker forcefully redirects you to another website.
2.Always Look for the lock: Before payment transaction, you must check that website is secure or not. Check that URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of consist HTTPS or not. If that site is secure then you will be able to see HTTPS and LOCK icon before URL in the browser. But If the website does not consist LOCK icon, you will able to see a message NOT SECURE in front of URL.
3.Don’t enter full information: Not a single website needs your social information. Only enter information which is mandatory. Especially do not enter card details because if a fraudulent person found your personal information then they will misuse that data.
4.Check the statements: If you made a payment online, do check your electronic payment receipt again and again. Do not wait till end of the month. Make sure you don’t see any fraudulent charge in electronic statement, even if the payment is originated from sites like PayPal. Do not pay any bill until you will see accurate and genuine deduction in bill. You must inform your bank regarding this issue within 30 days.
5.Always use strong passwords: Always build strong password instead of a common one.
Avoid: Your name, birthplace, friends name, place name, school name
Spell words backwards (like: goyal into “layog”)
Turn “goyal” into “gQy^!”
Randomly put the capital letter (like: “goyal” into “gQY^!”)
Don’t forget to use a special character
Note: do not use an obvious letter like a = @: o=0
6.Stay at home: Do not use any public computers. If you do, remember to log out, clear all cookies and history from that particular computer even if you just checked your email. If you have your own mobile or laptop so try to use that for transaction purpose or for important stuff. Do not share any details with anyone.
7.Think Mobile: According to the survey, around most of the adults use Smartphone for online shopping. Mostly they visit to get a gift instead of purchasing. Download the trusted online shopping website from the Google Play store instead of visiting a website from thebrowser.
8.Privatize your Wi-Fi: Always protect your Wi-Fi with a password. If you’re going out with a laptop make sure that you access web over a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Use your friend's Hotspot, stick to known network even if it is available free.
9.Count the cards: Gift cards are the most requested holiday plans. Make sure the gift card is getting you from a known company. There are many frauds available in the market, who fools you and get all your details.
10.What is too good to be true: Make sure you download and visit to trusted online website. There are many online website which offers you a product or services and hack your data. Beware from your friends too, who might innocently forward such thing which can harm your PC and important personal information.
11.Inoculate your PC: Fraudulent don’t just give fraud data, Along with it they also give you useful data. Some people think that the data will be useful and they install on their computer along with unwanted software. You need to protect your PC from such virus by installing antivirus.
