The scribes and Pharisees used the law on others like a club and perverted it for their selfish gain. "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble" (James 1:27). How could anyone, by any stretch of the imagination, the reason a way to turn this around to the point he could turn widows and orphans out of their homes, then stand in the streets as if righteous, making long prayers to God?
Is it any wonder Christ denounces them so harshly? Considering the content and repetition in His vilification, Jesus Christ is as incensed at them as perhaps anyone He ever addresses in the Bible, Old or New Testament. After calling them snakes in Matthew 23:33, He questions if there is any way they can escape eternal damnation!
Yet in His righteous anger, He still gives them insight on how to correct their course, to put them back on track regarding the spirit and attitude necessary to keep the law correctly. Christ intends His instruction to cause us to think through three essential elements of the purpose of that law and how it should work to man's good.
To the Pharisees, He did not explain the relationship of judgment, mercy, and faith to the law. Why cast His pearls before swine? But if they would make an effort, He gave them a clue about how to straighten out their thinking. In so doing, they would re-establish the law's purpose and meaning and gain a correct perspective on how to keep it. History shows they did not take the hint.
Paul uses an analogy that is similar to Galatians 3:23-25, where he likens the Old Covenant to a tutor meant to teach, but his application is very different. He says, "Now I say," indicating a different approach to his instruction.
As long as the heir is a child, as long as he is immature and unable to inherit, he is not much different from a servant. The child's potential is much higher, and his future is much brighter, but in day-to-day activities, he is restricted, limited, and controlled just as much as a servant of no lineage. The net effect of immaturity is the absence of control. The child, like a servant, can only respond to what happens to him rather than having any power over his well-being or destiny.

The Old Testament is a direct account of history with God leading the Nation of Israel out of Egypt. We can reference both positive as well as negative occurrences throughout God’s dealing with the Nation.

Hebrews 3:7, “Wherefore (as the Holy Spirit saith, “Today, if you hear His voice, 8, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9, when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years. 10, Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, “They do always err in their heart; and they have not known My ways. 11. So I sware in My wrath, They shall not enter into My rest).”
God says that He was very displeased with them. But why? To understand why they never enter into God’s rest and why that generation never made it to the promised land, we need to go back and trace whatever evidence Scripture shows us. In this case, the evidence leads us back to the beginning, the Garden of Eden.
Back to the Beginning
When we read of the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we need to understand that Adam sinned by disobedience and Eve was deceived by the Serpent. When this happened, the Tree of Life was closed to them as well as to the rest of mankind born into this world. They had rejected God and took allegiance with Satan, the God of this world, 2nd Corinthians 4:4. Since then, everyone born into this world has within them, the nature of Satan, we can call the Serpentine nature. That is the fundamental reason why we all have a death sentence placed upon us, Roman’s 5:12. Satan’s nature which is a mixture of good as well as evil, is not a pure nature which was available to them if they had taken of the Tree of Life. This Tree of Life we read of, will be closed to mankind from the third chapter of Genesis until we read of it in the Book of Revelation, chapter 22:2. Closed that is, with the exception of those to whom God calls directly, like Abraham, Genesis 12:1, or those who have a genuine love for Him. Why? Because our life and this creation is owned and paid for by God Himself.
To remedy the serpentine nature, gained within all men in the Garden, Moses speaks of a prophet who would be raised up:
Deuteronomy 18:15, “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto Me, unto Him shall ye harken:”
The prophet raised up was Jesus, Who fulfilled the promised Seed of Genesis 3:15, was born of a virgin as we read in Isaiah 7:14, and would bring salvation to all people, Zechariah 9:9. These Scriptures point directly to Jesus Christ.
During the time of the Exodus, at the foot of Mount Sinai, the people had a heart for God when they said, “All that the Lord has spoken, we will do.” They were trying their best to keep God’s instruction, by honoring the Sabbath Day and other commands. But according to the Apostle Paul, they still fell short of God’s approval. Why? Because of the serpentine nature within them. The same nature that Adam and his wife Eve inherited from the Serpent in the Garden. Was that nature removed because they were keeping God’s Seventh Day or Sunday Sabbath? No! the nature of the self and all the fleshy works the Apostle Paul lists in Galatians 5:19-21 were still within them. The carnal mind and fleshy nature within all men as well as women cannot be removed by our trying to be commandment keepers. These lusts of the flesh are the reason God shows us why the people during the wandering were not satisfying to Him. Their serpentine nature followed right along with them, producing dead works.
Sabbaths Days Today
Even today, many among the 7th day Sabbath or Sunday Sabbath worshipers, although they have a love for God, and have many mighty works, and are zealous to advance God’s Kingdom to others, may fall short also. How? By being commandment keepers. By trying to keep God’s law with our own strength, and not realizing that we all have a nature within us that is not in harmony with our heavenly Father.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
In Luke’s gospel, there is an incident where the disciples of Jesus, James and John, were displeased because of the Samaritans treatment of Jesus.
Luke 9:54, And when His disciples, James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?” 55, But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”
Their spirit, which wanted to destroy the Samaritans, was of the serpentine nature which was within them. It was this nature of the spirit within them that the Holy Spirit will work to eliminate, if allowed, not the keeping of any law. This nature has caused a curse on men from the time of the incident in the Garden of Eden. Men like to make rules and laws and want to pursue a lasting peace but because of their lack of knowledge will never be able. Now Jesus, as the promised Seed will disclose how there will be a remedy for the people.
John 4:23, “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeked such to worship Him. 24, God is Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
The human body is composed with three parts, spirit, soul, and body, 1st Thessalonians 5:23. We can see the human body as the outward form of men and women. The soul, hidden within the body, houses the intellect gained from the world, or of Christ. Our spirit is the communicator between those who are of God, or those who are of the world. Which spirit leads us, the Holy Spirit of God, or the spirit of the world? James and John were disciples of Jesus, and yet, they needed to be rebuked by Jesus.
When Jesus told His disciples that He would suffer many things, as well as death, Peter rebuked Him:
Matthew 16:22, then Peter took him, and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Be it far from Thee, Lord: this shall not be unto Thee.” 23, And He turned and said unto Peter, “Get thee behind Me, Satan: thou art an offence to Me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”
Is there any of the commandment keeping that would have caused a different attitude of James and John, as well as Peter? No, of course not. Their words that Jesus had to rebuke, came not from law breaking, but came through the serpentine nature within them. Galatians 4:22, “For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 23, But He that was born of the bondwoman, was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman, was by promise. 24, Which things are an allegory; for these are the two covenants; the one from mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar (Hagar). 25, For this Agar (Hagar) is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answered to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage to her children. 26, But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.”

The first refers to the founding of the earth in a positive way, as in the original creation, but the word katabolic is the overthrow of the casting down of the earth in a negative way. God never intended for the earth to experience such an upheaval.
Isaiah 45:18, For therefore saith the God that established the happiness; God Himself that formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He shaped it to be inhabited: I am the God.”
In Genesis 1:2, God used the expression, tohu and bohu to mean that the earth became waste and empty. The word tohu means to be formless, as water is formless, and bohu means to be empty. We are vessels to be filled with God’s life within us as our found treasure, 2nd Corinthians 4:7. What was the cause of this destruction?
Isaiah 14:12, “How art thou fell from heaven O Lucifer; son of the morning: however art thou curtail to the bottom, that did weaken the nations! thirteen, For thou hast aforementioned in thine heart, ‘ I'll ascend into heaven, i'll exalt my throne higher than the celebrities of God: ‘ I'll sit additionally upon the mount of the congregation, within the sides of the north: fourteen, I'll ascend higher than the heights higher than the clouds; I'll be just like the Highest.’ 15, nevertheless 1000 shalt be brought all the way down to hell, to the edges of Hell.”
The name Lucifer within the Hebrew wordbook is range 1966 and means that within the sense of brightness; the daystar. Isaiah offers us a touch a lot of of an outline of Lucifer within the age that was.
Isaiah 14:16, They that see thee shall narrowly think thee, and take into account the language, “Is this the person that created the planet to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; seventeen, That created the globe as a wild, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?”
Jeremiah 4: 23-26 “I beheld the planet, and, lo, it absolutely was while not kind, and void; and therefore the heavens, they'd no light-weight. I beheld the mountains, and lo, they trembled, and every one the hills stirred gently. I beheld, and lo, there was no man, and every one the birds of the heaven fled. I beheld, and lo, the fruitful place was a wild, and every one the cities therefrom were diminished at the presence of the Lord, and by His fierce anger.”
This is the planet age and its destruction that Peter describes because the world that was caused by Lucifer and therefore the angels who followed him, Revelation 12:4. this can be not describing Noah’s flood, that is of this second and gift earth age, the age of the judgment of all men. The flood of Genesis 6 had the family of patriarch, birds, and no mention of cities that were destroyed. In verse twenty-two, God tells the US of the shortcomings of His youngsters throughout this gift earth age, as a result of there's hardly any teaching of the first earth age and its overthrow, nevertheless the scientific community grasp that this earth had undergone turmoil at just one occasion.

In Exodus 3:1, we read that Moses came to the Mountain of God, Mount Horeb. And in verse twelve we read:
And He said, “Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be the token unto thee, that I have sent thee: when thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God on this mountain“.
The word of God refers us to a mountain and this mountain is called by two different names, Mount Horeb or Mount Sinai.
Mount Horeb is called the mountain of God, Exodus 3:1,12; 18:5; 24:13; Numbers 10:33, and 1st Kings 19:8.
God refers to His Mountain by two different names, the same way that a twenty four hour day is referred to as the day part and a night part, yet one day. In scripture, God is referred to as light and is of the day, such as the Lord’s day, day of visitation, all of the feasts days, and the Sabbath day. This is God’s side and a positive side of God’s dealings. With every positive side, there is also a negative side. The Mountain of God, Horeb, consists of a light side or a positive side as well and Mount Sinai consists of a night side or negative side.
Many people approach the Bible in the same way as the people approached Mount Horeb. This same Book can be to some as light and of the day, and others approach this Book as of and in the night. If all churchgoers approached the Bible as of the light and of the day, the Holy Bible would say the same thing to everyone. It is when the Bible is looked at according to the night or dark side that there are many differences, quarreling and fighting. This is one of the reasons why there are so many different church denominations.
This is not a problem with the Holy Book; it is a heart and attitude problem with the reader. Even though God is dealing with all His churchgoers, some approach the scriptures from the light side and some from the night side.
Exodus 19:3, And Moses went unto God and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain saying, “thus shall thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel”.
The two types of people are the house of Jacob and those of the house of Israel. The interesting thing about God’s statement is that the same man Jacob is referred to as Israel in many other places in the scriptures. His name is called Jacob before his conversion and God changed his name to Israel after his conversion. Genesis 32:28.
Exodus 5:1, And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, ” Thus saith the Lord, the God of Egypt, ‘Let My people go that they may hold a feast unto Me in the wilderness’.”
Exodus 10:9, And Moses said, “we will go with our young and with our old, and with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the Lord”.
When the people were in Egypt, they were told to get a lamb for every household, kill it, and feast on the lamb all night. This was in type, Christ, who would become the lamb of God, John 1:29. This is also called a feast to the Lord.
Exodus 12:14, And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance forever.
This was the time when the Egyptians had God’s plague poured out upon them. As long as God’s people were feasting on the lamb, they were protected from the plague. The house of Jacob and the children were under grace, not law. The people didn’t have to do anything but put blood on their doorposts and feast on the lamb for their protection. The plague was poured out upon the Egyptians because of God’s judgment of sin defined by God’s law. The light part of the day did not occur to the people until they had consumed the lamb. It was at this time that the night had to give way to the day. The people had within them, the lamb in type, being Christ, which paid the ransom for sin which is within us all.
God led them through the shores of the Red Sea. By crossing over, they were in type out of Egypt and out of the world. Now they were to meet with God at Mount Horeb, the Mountain of God.
Exodus 19:4, “Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles wings, and brought you unto Myself. 5, Now therefor, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My Covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people; for all the earth is mine: 6, and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shall speak unto the children of Israel.”
In God’s statement, there are three things mentioned. The first one is to hear his voice, the second is to keep His covenant. This is the Covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Exodus 2:24. The third is that they were a holy priesthood, (See our article, God’s Priesthood). God’s priesthood , typified by the entire nation, would deal with man and sin within man.
When Moses had spoken these words of God to the people, they said, “All that the Lord had said, we will do”. This statement by the people caused a big problem for God. The people didn’t have a heart for God, didn’t know Him, or for that matter, didn’t know themselves.
The people didn’t have to do anything to escape Egypt and three months later arrive at the Mountain of God. The only thing that they were required to do was to feast and eat, not the food of Egypt and of the old creation, but feed on the food created by God and of the new creation, water from the split rock and manna from heaven. John 6:33.
We should consider the people’s answer very carefully. They said, “all that the Lord had said, we will do”. When they were in bondage in Egypt, what if God had said to them, “since you are My people and in bondage to the Egyptians, I want you to deliver yourselves out of Egypt, then go to the shores of the Red Sea, and then I would like you to cross over to the other side. When on the other side, if you become thirsty, I want you to drink water from the split rock, then when you get hungry, because there is no Egyptian food on the other side, I would like you to call down the heavenly manna to satisfy your hunger”.
This kind of instruction from God and the people doing it of their own strength sounds ridiculous as it was meant to be. The people leaving Egypt and arriving three months later at the Mountain of God took no effort on their part, they only had to rely on the leading of God, through Moses.
Since Mount Horeb has a twofold significance, it may also be called Mount Sinai. Exodus 19:11,18, 20-24; 34:2-4; Galatians 4:24-25; Hebrews 12:18-21.
When the people replied, “all that the Lord had said we will do”, the people removed themselves from God’s grace and put themselves under law, meaning, they were no longer protected by the blood on the doorposts and in a house feasting on the lamb as they once were, but now, they were removed from God’s protection and placed themselves under the judgment of God just like the Egyptians once were. The negative attitude of the people brought about a change of atmosphere and conditions, along with a name change to the Mountain of God Mount Horeb, to Mount Sinai, and caused a separation between God and His people. Now the Mountain of God was no longer called Mount Horeb but Mount Sinai.
At Mount Sinai, the sinfulness of God’s people was exposed, and it became a boundary that God had set between himself and the people. The thick clouds created darkness and there was loud thunder and lightning with a long blast of a trumpet. And in Exodus 19:16, we read that all the camp trembled.
There was none of this negative side earlier in the chapter. It only came about because the people didn’t know themselves or the One who had delivered them out of Egypt. God wanted His people to continue in His Covenant relationship that He had with the Fathers, feast with them, and spend time with them as Moses did.
God had no intention of giving any laws or commanding the people to obey any law. Exodus 20:1 says that God spoke all these words and didn’t command anything of the people. God was revealing Himself and His Divine Nature as to what kind of God had rescued them. The law that we read about in Exodus twenty is a reflection on the inner character of God as the law maker. There is no record that Moses was told to keep any laws. He was on the same Mountain for forty days and forty nights that the people were not allowed even to touch. Moses attitude was of the positive side, not like the people who were on the negative side standing far off and trembling, Exodus 20:18. When Moses came down the Mountain, his face shone. Exodus 34:35. This was a type of transfiguration. His face shone because he was infused with God and spending time with the Lord, and not by keeping any laws.
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 7:12 that the law is Holy, just and good. And in verse 14, he says the law is spiritual.
1st Thessalonians 5:8, “but let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith, and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.”
One of the first things a Christian does when he is called of God is to think that he has to do something for God. It’s part of the human experience. The people are never told that God just wants them to fellowship, rest and mingle with Him.
We are vessels to contain God’s spirit within. All the laws, statues and commands are within God’s Spirit. If the Spirit of God and Christ are mingling with our spirit, John 14:23, we can’t help but be doers of the law. Why? Because the law is a law of love and as a Christian grows, he can’t help but grow in love toward God and his fellow man. Why? Because we read in 1st John 4:16 that God is love. The Divine Nature through God’s Spirit needs to be infused in us all. That was the purpose of Mount Horeb. Instead, the people thought they could be doers of whatever God says by their own strength, which caused the atmosphere to change on God’s Holy Mountain. God knew that the law would put demands on the people that they were not able to keep. Only through His Spirit will men become law abiding people, this through no effort of ourselves but through the Spirit of God mingling with our spirit.
The law was given on Mount Sinai under darkness. We see the results of people trying to keep God’s laws with their own strength.
God says in Exodus 3:12, that the token that Moses was sent by Him to deliver the people out of Egypt was when the people were brought to God’s Mountain, Mount Horeb, not mount Sinai. Today, most Bible teachers in teaching the people refer to Mount Sinai and the keeping of God’s commandments, not spending time with Him like Moses did.
